A New YA to Watch Out For

The Dragon’s Promise by Elizabeth Lim (Release Date: August 30, 2022)

The Dragon’s Promise (sequel to Six Crimson Cranes) follows Shiori’s quest in finding a place for magic in her hometown of Kiata. She has to return the pearl to its rightful owner and to fulfill this promise made at her stepmother’s deathbed, she travels from one mythical place after another. Shiori (and the readers) barely have time to catch their breath before she is launched into defending herself against wriggling kelp and guard sharks to fighting with demons hungry for her life-giving blood. Threading in mythical lore of deities, demons, and dragons, these magical elements make for a good fantasy read that gives it an ethereal feel. It’s a fictional fantasy that is fast-paced and gripping. Love the storytelling and great character development! My favorite character has to be steady, mild-mannered Takkan who remains loyal to Shiori despite her impulsiveness and penchant for getting into all sorts of trouble. It is a great read in true YA fashion!

YA Parental Advisory:

While waiting for its release…

Read Book 1, Six Crimson Cranes which gives Shiori’s background, her exile, and how she breaks the curses on herself and on her brothers (brought about by her own stepmother). Learn the back story and get to know her fiancé, Takkan, which are integral to appreciate Book 2.
